Dr Abigail Droge, ‘The Role of Literature in an Industrial Society: Student Perspectives from Mason Science College’

Wednesday, 5th July 2023, 5pm – Arts 101 (Lecture Room 4)

Join us on Wednesday July 5th at 5pm in Arts 101 (Lecture Room 4) for a wonderful talk by Dr Abigail Droge about Mason Science College – precursor to our own UoB! This session will be an informal paper followed by group discussion, focused especially on pedagogical and archival questions – how archives can help us understand student perspectives on the role of literature in industrial societies.

Dr Droge will focus on the question of how the Mason Science College archives helps us to understand the role that students saw for literature in an industrial society and, particularly, in an industrial college. In the conversation afterwards, she would be really interested in hearing people’s thoughts about how returning to the records of a college’s first years and engaging with early student perspectives might prompt reflection on the ways that we frame literature in our own classes now (both at Birmingham and in higher education more broadly).
