(My Chapter, Not The Book)"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>I finished my chapter. Or at least the first draft of it. It\u2019s too long but I don\u2019t know what to cut and it\u2019s gone off to external review in the hope that someone will tell me.<\/p>\n<p>It\u2019s something of a culmination of theories that I\u2019ve been following and developing since 2004, when I first read the political scientist Georg Sorenson\u2019s\u00a0<em>The Transformation of the State: Beyond the Myth of Retreat <\/em>on a plane coming back from the University at Aarhus in Denmark.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone wp-image-279\" src=\"https:\/\/blog.bham.ac.uk\/b-film\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/18\/2016\/08\/1600152-197x300.jpg\" alt=\"1600152\" width=\"223\" height=\"340\" srcset=\"https:\/\/blog.bham.ac.uk\/b-film\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/18\/2016\/08\/1600152-197x300.jpg 197w, https:\/\/blog.bham.ac.uk\/b-film\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/18\/2016\/08\/1600152.jpg 312w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 223px) 85vw, 223px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>S\u00f8renson writes about a new system in the making beyond the nation-state and it is this theoretical framework that I adopted and deployed in looking at Cuban cinema, with Dunja Fehimovi\u0107, Basque cinema, with Mar\u00eda Pilar Rodr\u00edguez and independent American cinema on my own.<\/p>\n<p>Co-editing <em>The Routledge Companion to World Cinema<\/em> gave me the opportunity to theorise all my ideas and lay them out as a fluid framework for understanding the mutability of World cinema. I\u2019m jumping ahead, of course, to what is currently known as \u2018chapter 22\u2019 but it\u2019s good to at least have a draft of it in the bank.<\/p>\n<p>Does it make sense? Is it viable? Hell, is it any good?<\/p>\n<p>No idea.<\/p>\n<p>This is how it begins.<\/p>\n<p><em>Obviously, a rigid, blinkered, absolutist world view is the easiest to keep hold of, whereas the fluid, uncertain, metamorphic picture I&#8217;ve always carried about is rather more vulnerable.<\/em><br \/>\n&#8211; Salman Rushdie (1993: 23)<\/p>\n<p>A brilliant beginning, I\u2019m sure you\u2019ll agree.<\/p>\n<p>As for the rest of it?
