The report looks at carers in the UK and their role in the social care system. The report finds that there has been an increase in the number of family carers, an increase in the number of hours of care provided by family carers and an increase in the intensity of care activities provided. Family carers fulfil an important role in providing care but this has implications: being a carer can be stressful, can introduce conflict into a family and can have financial implications.

Given the important role of family carers, support available for carers needs to be considered.
