On 19 December the Department of Communities and Local Government announced that\u00a0councils will be able to raise tax by up to 5.99% to address shortfalls in social care funding:\u00a0Government sets out further measures to support councils to deliver services<\/a><\/p>\n

This announcement will be \u00a0welcome\u00a0good news \u00a0<\/em>for many\u00a0but will also have lead to some mixed reactions, not least among carers. Additional funding\u00a0for social care should help carers and their families by making more support available but \u00a0having to pay more council tax will be less welcome<\/p>\n

Sajid Javid, the communities secretary said he wanted to ease pressure on council services but did not want taxpayers to have to pay higher bills. However, The\u00a0Guardian<\/a> \u00a0(19\/12\/17) suggests that council tax bills could rise \u00a0by up to \u00a3100 a year . Perhaps, not surprisingly\u00a0critics \u00a0have accused the government of \u201cshifting the burden\u201d \u2014 and blame \u2014 for struggling local services away from Whitehall and on to council taxpayers\u00a0(The Financial Times\u00a0<\/a>19\/12\/17)<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
