The concordance is a basic display format in corpus linguistics. It is also a powerful tool in revealing language patterns that are not visible in running text, or in Sinclair&#8217;s famous words:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>&#8220;The language looks rather different when you look at a lot of it at once&#8221;<cite>John Sinclair (1991: 100)<\/cite><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>The CLiC KWICGrouper function allows the user to interactively explore patterns within a concordance by searching for words in an adjustable span around the node word.<\/p>\n<h1>How it works<\/h1>\n<p>The \u2018KWICGrouper\u2019 opens through a tab on the right of the concordance screen and can be used to group concordances based on particular words within a desired span. Matching lines are highlighted according to the number of search words they contain; those lines with the most hits are moved to the top of the concordance screen. This allows the user to identify continuous and non-continuous patterns. You can access the KWICGrouper through the <a href=\"http:\/\/clic.bham.ac.uk\/concordances\/\">CLiC concordance search<\/a>. For a detailed example, watch our video tutorial:<\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" width=\"840\" height=\"473\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/AFrziuQDk5I?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/p>\n<h1>Background<\/h1>\n<p>The concept of the KWICGrouper builds on Michaela Mahlberg&#8217;s notion of &#8216;local textual functions&#8217; as described, for example, in her <a href=\"https:\/\/www.academia.edu\/4796587\/Clusters_key_clusters_and_local_textual_functions_in_Dickens\">article on clusters and local textual functions in Dickens<\/a>. \u00a0A <a href=\"http:\/\/revistas.um.es\/ijes\/article\/view\/49121\">detailed description of the original KWICGrouper concept can be found in this article<\/a> from <a href=\"https:\/\/www.researchgate.net\/profile\/Matthew_Odonnell3\">Matthew Brook O&#8217;Donnell<\/a>. A more <a href=\"http:\/\/www.euppublishing.com\/doi\/full\/10.3366\/cor.2016.0102\">recent article focusing on CLiC and novel uses of concordances (Mahlberg et al. 2016 &#8211; open access)<\/a>\u00a0describes how the KWICGrouper concept could be applied to CLiC.
