The history of this celebration goes back to the early days of Islam when some of the Tabi\u2019un\u00a0began to hold sessions in which poetry and songs composed to honour Muhammad were recited and sung to the crowds.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-medium wp-image-1031\" src=\"http:\/\/blog.bham.ac.uk\/culturalcalendar\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/70\/2020\/10\/330px-Sekaten_Yogyakarta_2011_1-300x225.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"225\" srcset=\"https:\/\/blog.bham.ac.uk\/culturalcalendar\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/70\/2020\/10\/330px-Sekaten_Yogyakarta_2011_1-300x225.jpg 300w, https:\/\/blog.bham.ac.uk\/culturalcalendar\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/70\/2020\/10\/330px-Sekaten_Yogyakarta_2011_1.jpg 330w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 85vw, 300px\" \/><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left\">Mawlid is celebrated in almost all Islamic countries, and in other countries that have a significant Muslim population, for example Ethiopia, India, theMaldives, the UK and France. You will see buildings colourfully decorated and the streets filled to the brink with those celebrating Muhammad\u2019s birth.<\/p>\n<p>People will also invite friends and relatives over to enjoy a meal, give food to those in poverty, take part in special prayer meetings, read and recite the Koran, and teach children about Muhammad\u2019s life.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-1029\" src=\"http:\/\/blog.bham.ac.uk\/culturalcalendar\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/70\/2020\/10\/food.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"227\" height=\"222\" \/><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left\">In the Maldives, it is also traditional to sing the Arabic song called Malood, which praises Islam\u2019s founding prophet.
