Regarded as one of the most influential musicians of the 20<sup>th<\/sup> century, his work was acclaimed by fellow musicians and critics, particularly his innovative work in the 1970s.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>He studied art, music and design before embarking on a professional career as a musician in 1963. His first top five entry was Space Oddity in 1969. In 1972 he re-emerged during the glam rock period with his flamboyant androgynous alter ego Ziggy Stardust. With an extensive discography from 1967-2016, his music covered generations of new fans. He also ventured into the world of films with, notably, the cult film \u2018The Man who fell to Earth\u2019 (1976).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Among the many music awards and achievements in his lifetime, in 2008 the spider Heteropoda davidbowie (a reference to his album \u2018Ziggy Stardust and the Spiders from Mars\u2019) was named in his honour and in 2015 a main-belt&nbsp;asteroid was named 342832 Davidbowie.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\"><figure class=\"aligncenter size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"225\" height=\"225\" src=\"https:\/\/blog.bham.ac.uk\/culturalcalendar\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/70\/2021\/12\/ziggy.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-1858\" srcset=\"https:\/\/blog.bham.ac.uk\/culturalcalendar\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/70\/2021\/12\/ziggy.jpg 225w, https:\/\/blog.bham.ac.uk\/culturalcalendar\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/70\/2021\/12\/ziggy-150x150.jpg 150w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 225px) 85vw, 225px\" \/><\/figure><\/div>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>8 January 2022 marks what would have been the late great David Bowie\u2019s 75th birthday.
