{"id":1869,"date":"2022-02-01T08:48:00","date_gmt":"2022-02-01T08:48:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/blog.bham.ac.uk\/culturalcalendar\/?p=1869"},"modified":"2022-01-26T11:56:28","modified_gmt":"2022-01-26T11:56:28","slug":"lgbt-history-month-3","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blog.bham.ac.uk\/culturalcalendar\/2022\/02\/01\/lgbt-history-month-3\/","title":{"rendered":"LGBT+ History Month"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>1-28 February<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\"><figure class=\"aligncenter size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"261\" height=\"193\" src=\"https:\/\/blog.bham.ac.uk\/culturalcalendar\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/70\/2022\/01\/lgbt.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-1870\" \/><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>LGBT+ History Month is annual month-long observance of lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender history, and the history of the gay rights and related civil rights movements.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The overall aim of LGBT+ History Month is to promote equality and diversity for the benefit of the public by<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>Increasing the visibility of lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender (LGBT+) people, their history, lives and their experiences in the curriculum and culture of educational and other institutions, and the wider community<\/li><li>Raising awareness and advancing education on matters affecting the LGBT+ community<\/li><li>Working to make educational and other institutions safe spaces for all LGBT+ communities; and<\/li><li>Promoting the welfare of LGBT+ people, by ensuring that the education system recognises and enables LGBT+ people to achieve their full potential, so they contribute fully to society and lead fulfilled lives, thus benefiting society as a whole.<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"183\" height=\"275\" src=\"https:\/\/blog.bham.ac.uk\/culturalcalendar\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/70\/2022\/01\/bishopsgate.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-1872\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\"><figure class=\"alignright size-full is-resized\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/blog.bham.ac.uk\/culturalcalendar\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/70\/2022\/01\/bishopsgate-2-1.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-1873\" width=\"250\" height=\"201\" \/><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>The LGBT archives are held<strong> <\/strong>at the Bishopsgate Institute https:\/\/www.bishopsgate.org.uk\/: they include thousands of journals, books, banners, badges, t-shirts, memorabilia, oral histories, written personal accounts, private papers, reports, postcards, posters, press clippings, photographs and more on individuals and organisations important to understanding and celebrating LGBT+ history, politics and culture. The collections include the archives of organisations such as&nbsp;<em>Stonewall, Switchboard<\/em>&nbsp;and&nbsp;<em>Outrage!<\/em>&nbsp;and the records of important LGBT+ activists such as Peter Tatchell and Paris Lees.
