Windrush Day celebrates the sea voyage of the MV Empire Windrush and the rich culture and heritage the passengers brought with them from the Caribbean.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

HMT Empire Windrush arrived in Britain on 22 June 1948. On board there were more than 800 passengers from the Caribbean. However, on arrival in the UK people were often met with racism, lack of acknowledgment of their professional skills and very different living conditions.<\/p>\n\n\n

Windrush Day is a chance to celebrate British Caribbean communities and to acknowledge the sacrifices and contribution that the Windrush generation and their descendants have made to British society.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

This June marks 75 years since that voyage and a chance to come together and celebrate this shared history.<\/p>\n\n\n

Here at UoB to celebrate the 75th<\/sup> anniversary of the Windrush migration, staff and students are invited to join the Race Equality Network at Main Library for a small display of items from our collection telling the stories of the Windrush generation and their legacy.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

From 13.00 at the Main Library there will be music and a chance to collect a free copy of David Harewood\u2019s autobiography \u201cMaybe I Don\u2019t Belong Here<\/em>\u201d \u2013 50 copies are available on a first come first served basis whilst stocks last! <\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
