Invented by Thomas Newcomen in 1712, it was first installed at Coneygree Coal Works in Tipton and was used to pump water out of mines. A replica of the engine takes pride of place at Black Country Living Museum, in Dudley.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>By Victorian times, the&nbsp;Black Country&nbsp;was one of the most heavily industrialised areas in Britain, and it became known for its pollution, particularly from iron and coal industries and their many associated smaller businesses.
