Bates 50th anniversary"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>29 January 2024 marks the 50<sup>th<\/sup> anniversary of the death of HE Bates.<\/p>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"aligncenter size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"176\" height=\"287\" src=\"https:\/\/blog.bham.ac.uk\/culturalcalendar\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/70\/2023\/12\/bates-2-1.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-3073\" \/><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n<p>Herbert Ernest Bates (1905-1974) was an English novelist and is widely recognised as one of the finest short story writers of his generation. His first novel <em>The Two Sisters<\/em> was published in 1926, with a collection of short stories \u2018<em>Day\u2019s End, and other stories<\/em>\u2019 published in 1928. He became well known as a writer about the countryside and the life of the agricultural labourer.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Commissioned as a writer for the Royal Air Force in 1941, as \u201cFlying Officer X\u201d he gained popularity with\u00a0<em>The Greatest People in the World<\/em>\u00a0(1942) and\u00a0<em>How Sleep the Brave<\/em>\u00a0(1943).<\/p>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"aligncenter size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"179\" height=\"282\" src=\"https:\/\/blog.bham.ac.uk\/culturalcalendar\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/70\/2023\/12\/bates-3.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-3074\" \/><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n<p>His post-war novels include the <em>Darling Buds of May<\/em> (where we first meet the Larkins) and <em>The Triple Echo<\/em> (later made into a film with Glenda Jackson and Oliver Reed)<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>29 January 2024 marks the 50th anniversary of the death of HE Bates.
