Of South Africa\u2019s 22.7 million eligible voters, 19.7 million voted in the 1994 national election.<\/p>\n<p>Today,\u00a0South Africa\u00a0celebrates\u00a0<strong>Freedom Day<\/strong>\u00a0to mark the liberation of its country and its people from a long period of colonialism and White minority domination (apartheid). It is an\u00a0important day\u00a0to commemorate the country&#8217;s history and the dawn of democracy.<\/p>\n<p>Prior to 1994 during apartheid, racial segregation, which was enforced by the National Party, prevented any kind of inter-racial activity.
