{"id":937,"date":"2020-10-02T09:13:02","date_gmt":"2020-10-02T08:13:02","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/blog.bham.ac.uk\/culturalcalendar\/?p=937"},"modified":"2020-10-07T09:53:18","modified_gmt":"2020-10-07T08:53:18","slug":"sukkot-2-9-october","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blog.bham.ac.uk\/culturalcalendar\/2020\/10\/02\/sukkot-2-9-october\/","title":{"rendered":"Sukkot 2-9 October"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong>Sukkot<\/strong>\u00a0commemorates the years that the Jews spent in the desert on their way to the Promised Land, and\u00a0celebrates\u00a0the way in which God protected them under difficult desert conditions.\u00a0Sukkot\u00a0is also known as the Feast of Tabernacles, or the Feast of Booths.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-940 aligncenter\" src=\"http:\/\/blog.bham.ac.uk\/culturalcalendar\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/70\/2020\/09\/sukkah.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"251\" height=\"201\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Sukkot is celebrated by, first of all, building a sukkah &#8211; \u00a0a temporary little hut or shelter. \u00a0 \u00a0The roof covering must be made of something that used to grow in the earth like palm leaves or bamboo sticks, and the walls can be made of any material that can hold up to wind. Jews are required to eat in the sukkah for eight days (seven days in Israel), and some even sleep in the sukkah for the duration of the holiday. The sukkah is decorated and the first day is considered a holy day in which most forms of work are forbidden.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-938 aligncenter\" src=\"http:\/\/blog.bham.ac.uk\/culturalcalendar\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/70\/2020\/09\/food-2.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"275\" height=\"183\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Sukkot\u00a0meal inspiration can come from the harvest origin of the holiday, and\u00a0meals\u00a0can include fresh fruits and vegetables, or other harvest-related ingredients.
