Giovanni was apprenticed under his uncle, Matteo Lucchesi, who was a leading architect in\u00a0Magistrato delle Acque, the state organization responsible for engineering and restoring historical buildings.<\/p>\n<p>In Rome he studied under Giuseppe Vasi, who introduced him to the art of etching and engraving of the city and its monuments.\u00a0After his studies with Vasi, he collaborated with pupils of the French Academy in Rome\u00a0to produce a series of\u00a0vedute\u00a0(views) of the city; his first work was\u00a0Prima parte di Architettura e Prospettive\u00a0(1743), followed in 1745 by\u00a0Varie Vedute di Roma Antica e Moderna.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-968 aligncenter\" src=\"http:\/\/blog.bham.ac.uk\/culturalcalendar\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/70\/2020\/09\/330px-Piranesi-17026-300x206.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"206\" srcset=\"https:\/\/blog.bham.ac.uk\/culturalcalendar\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/70\/2020\/09\/330px-Piranesi-17026-300x206.jpg 300w, https:\/\/blog.bham.ac.uk\/culturalcalendar\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/70\/2020\/09\/330px-Piranesi-17026.jpg 330w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 85vw, 300px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>After a three-year period in Venice, he returned to Rome and opened a workshop in the Via del Corso.
