{"id":2496,"date":"2025-04-21T20:22:01","date_gmt":"2025-04-21T19:22:01","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/blog.bham.ac.uk\/englitpostgrad\/?p=2496"},"modified":"2025-04-21T20:22:02","modified_gmt":"2025-04-21T19:22:02","slug":"pop-culture-theory-group-5pm-wed-23rd-april","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blog.bham.ac.uk\/englitpostgrad\/2025\/04\/21\/pop-culture-theory-group-5pm-wed-23rd-april\/","title":{"rendered":"Pop Culture Theory Group (5pm, Wed 23rd April)"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>Following a suggestion that we should be marking Earth Day (22nd April) in a reading group session, the next topic is Ecocriticism, or &#8216;&nbsp;the study of the relationship between literature and the physical environment&#8217; (Glotfelty 1996: xix).&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>On&nbsp;<strong>Wednesday 23rd April<\/strong>&nbsp;from&nbsp;<strong>5-7pm BST<\/strong>&nbsp;we will be reading and discussing [via Zoom] Chris Baratta&#8217;s &#8216;Introduction&#8217; to the edited collection&nbsp;<em><a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.cambridgescholars.com\/resources\/pdfs\/978-1-4438-3513-8-sample.pdf\">Environmentalism in the Realm of Science<\/a><br><a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.cambridgescholars.com\/resources\/pdfs\/978-1-4438-3513-8-sample.pdf\">Fiction and Fantasy Literature<\/a><\/em>&nbsp;(2012) [linked].&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>(a secondary piece I found while searching for this session&#8217;s reading was &#8216;<a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.tandfonline.com\/doi\/full\/10.1080\/14688417.2025.2458333\">The Queer Time of Ecogothic<\/a>&#8216; by Heather Ray Milligan, which looks fab, but just a bit off-topic. If you&#8217;d like to read more pieces in this field, here&#8217;s a great list of &#8216;<a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/culturalpolitics.net\/index\/environmental_justice\/popular_culture\">Popular Culture &amp; Environmental Justice<\/a>&#8216; works.
