Open Days

Choosing a University can be really daunting, and quite frankly overwhelming at times. I remember having so many good choices, that all offered something different, yet amazing – and I had no idea how to select which one was the best one for me. If you’re reading this, and think you’re in a similar position to the frightened Mohsin two years ago, then worry not. I am here to offer a solution. Open Days! Open days are great. They give you the opportunity to explore the university in a way that browsing online and reading articles just doesn’t cut it. You can walk around different accommodations, and various buildings and speak to current students, like myself, who were once in a similar position. This is a fantastic way for you to interact with the university before having submitted an application, and an even better way to actually envision what life would really be like if you ended up studying there.

Open days themselves can also be a bit hectic and so here are my top tips for open days!

  • Don’t rush your visit! Make sure you leave plenty of time to explore in and around the university whilst also being able to attend any talks that may be happening that day! It’s important to get a proper feel for the place as this is where you could be living for the next three or four years, possibly even longer.
  • Speak to as many current students as possible! Their experiences will be all be different, and they’ll also be able to share their advice with you. Make sure you ask any questions that you have as you’ll receive honest and relevant responses which will be very useful.
  • Make notes! Make notes about the exam and coursework structure of your course as this will be important to refer back to later when comparing universities. For example, if you love exams then it might not be a great idea to have a coursework heavy course as you may not enjoy the constant assessment.
  • Visit accommodation! It’s important to remember that academia will only be one aspect of your life at university and it’s important to get a feel for the places that you may be living in. Are they affordable? Are they conveniently located for you? Can you see yourself living there?
  • Most importantly have fun! This day is for you to make the most informed decision that you possibly can, and so it should be centred around you! Enjoy the refreshments and activities on offer and take time to soak in what may be your new home for the foreseeable future.

Until next time!
