In an article, recently published in Sociology of Health and Illness, we explore this very question, drawing on our research of the <a class=\"BcCwxaHikpyepwRwtVGKNyXGurXnwmOyGVc \" data-test-app-aware-link=\"\" href=\"https:\/\/www.linkedin.com\/search\/results\/all\/?keywords=%23wearenotwaiting&amp;origin=HASH_TAG_FROM_FEED\"><span aria-hidden=\"true\">#<\/span>WeAreNotWaiting<\/a> movement.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">For over a decade, this self-organized community of people with diabetes has co-created medical software that is not only life-critical but often more responsive to patient needs than the offerings of leading medical device companies.<br><\/p>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:1px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong><em>The Healthcare Commons<\/em><\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Drawing on the work of <a class=\"ember-view\" href=\"https:\/\/www.linkedin.com\/in\/david-bollier-254129\/\" id=\"ember417\">David Bollier<\/a> and Silke Helfrich, we argue that <a class=\"BcCwxaHikpyepwRwtVGKNyXGurXnwmOyGVc \" data-test-app-aware-link=\"\" href=\"https:\/\/www.linkedin.com\/search\/results\/all\/?keywords=%23wearenotwaiting&amp;origin=HASH_TAG_FROM_FEED\"><span aria-hidden=\"true\">#<\/span>WeAreNotWaiting<\/a> offers a blueprint for the practice of commoning in healthcare.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A &#8216;commons&#8217; emerges when a community comes together to co-create and manage a resource essential for their survival, often as a response to structural failures within markets and state institutions.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In this case, the movement was born from the inability of the medical device industry to prioritize the daily, lived reality of those with type 1 diabetes over proprietary interests and slow-moving regulatory cycles.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:1px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong><em>An Alternative Innovation Ecosystem<\/em><\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Our research describes how the movement built a successful alternative by adopting pro-social behaviors such as:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Generous knowledge-sharing over proprietary siloes.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Open-source tools that anyone can adopt, modify, and improve.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Eschewing strict hierarchies in favor of distributed, collective governance.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:2px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong><em>Why This Matters for Healthcare in the 21st century<\/em><\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The <a class=\"BcCwxaHikpyepwRwtVGKNyXGurXnwmOyGVc \" href=\"https:\/\/www.linkedin.com\/search\/results\/all\/?keywords=%23wearenotwaiting&amp;origin=HASH_TAG_FROM_FEED\" data-test-app-aware-link=\"\"><span aria-hidden=\"true\">#<\/span>WeAreNotWaiting<\/a> movement has not only transformed the lives of those who use these tools\u2014it has had a demonstrable impact on the wider diabetes landscape.
