Health care professional-patient interactions present critical opportunities to help or hinder this experience. This current study used a social constructivist meta ethnography to understand the interaction. The research evolved across 5 stages and required multiple points of literature searching from considering the experiences of patients towards searching for research on theoretical constructs including hope, uncertainty, and emotional regulation. Critical to the development of the model was iterative cycles of analysis. Each cycle was used to test, define and refine understanding of the interaction between health care professional and patient. A novel model was produced that extends current understanding of interactions and can be used as a basis to develop interventions and further training for health care professionals. Implications and future recommendations are given.
