We might pick the low-hanging fruit and then procrastinate on the more complex tasks. That can wait until tomorrow…

I’ve come to realise that often I put off the tasks which I might feel I’m ill-equipped to complete. I might not know how to do a certain element or am worried my effort will be poor. I doubt I’m alone in this.

I’ve come to realise that when I feel like this, honesty is the best policy and I should ask for support. If it’s a new task it’s reasonable to assume we might not know exactly how to do it so support is a logical course of action. For a long time though I haven’t taken this approach.

Having spent a few weeks now being honest with people in asking for support has been really freeing. So, if your procrastination is caused by fear of how to approach a problem then ask someone more experienced. It seems super simple but for me, it’s made a huge impact on my output.

T.Brownlee@bham.ac.uk

By Dr Tom Brownlee Photo credit: Austin Kehmeier on Unsplash I think we all suffer from putting tasks off.
