We were joined by<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Dr David Crepaz-Keay from the Mental Health Foundation,<\/li>\n<li>Colleagues and young people from the McPin Foundation<\/li>\n<li>Councillor Kath Scott (Sutton Vesey Ward, Labour Party)<\/li>\n<li>Ella Bradshaw (Policy and Public Affairs Officer &#8211; NSPCC)<\/li>\n<li>Adrian McLean (Severn Academies Educational Trust)<\/li>\n<li>Twenty-young people from across the UK<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>We shared five insights from our research about how social media influencers communicate about mental health:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Seeing stories of how people have recovered from mental health challenges can provide reassurance and encouragement in some cases.<\/li>\n<li>Information about supplements for mental health can be misleading and taking them can lead to harm.<\/li>\n<li>There is a lack of engaging content about mental health that appeals to young men.<\/li>\n<li>For people with some mental health challenges, accessing information from influencers can make them feel worse.<\/li>\n<li>Accessing information about mental health can lead to self-diagnosis, which might not always be helpful.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>We asked the young people at the Jury to debate which of these insights were most important to them and how we should address them.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_75\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-75\" style=\"width: 300px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-75\" src=\"http:\/\/blog.bham.ac.uk\/influencerstories\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/142\/2025\/05\/1000000823-300x169.jpg\" alt=\"Group of young people in a classroom debating\" width=\"300\" height=\"169\" srcset=\"https:\/\/blog.bham.ac.uk\/influencerstories\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/142\/2025\/05\/1000000823-300x169.jpg 300w, https:\/\/blog.bham.ac.uk\/influencerstories\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/142\/2025\/05\/1000000823-1024x576.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/blog.bham.ac.uk\/influencerstories\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/142\/2025\/05\/1000000823-768x432.jpg 768w, https:\/\/blog.bham.ac.uk\/influencerstories\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/142\/2025\/05\/1000000823-1536x864.jpg 1536w, https:\/\/blog.bham.ac.uk\/influencerstories\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/142\/2025\/05\/1000000823-2048x1152.jpg 2048w, https:\/\/blog.bham.ac.uk\/influencerstories\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/142\/2025\/05\/1000000823-250x141.jpg 250w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 85vw, 300px\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-75\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Young people setting priorities.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p><span style=\"background-color: transparent;text-align: inherit\">Our young people called for five changes:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Legislation that would require social media sites to verify the accounts of creators with health credentials.<\/li>\n<li>More face-to-face support to support mental health conversations in &#8216;third spaces&#8217; and workplaces.<\/li>\n<li>New co-designed educational resources to help young people consume online mental health content more effectively.<\/li>\n<li>Content creators to develop authentic campaigns that connect better with young men&#8217;s leisure interests.<\/li>\n<li>Social media sites to promote spaces for positive mental health stories.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>We will be working with young people to take forward these ideas over the coming months.
