Configuration Manager Release: SCCM Replacement Service Release

Published: Posted on

The new Configuration Manager Service was launched on the 27 March and will gradually replace the current SCCM Service. The new service brings a range of new features and has been built with user experience and standardisation at the forefront to ensure a consistent experience regardless of physical location. The service includes a Default Task Sequence for Staff and Students. We have also migrated all apps that are installed on over 1,000 devices, including any app within the Default Task Sequence.

As part of the upgrade we will be removing the Application Catalogue and using the new and improved Software Centre for app browsing and installation.

From today all imaging (new or re-image) should be performed from the new Configuration Manager Service.

What happens next?
You’ll need to update your boot media to ensure you are using the new service. Then speak to your Support Lead to get the new boot media password.

Over the coming months we will be migrating devices across to the new service. This is a silent and non-disruptive process and we’ll be working with your local area to co-ordinate.

Once we’ve decommissioned the old SCCM Service we’ll begin a review of the Default Task Sequence to ensure it is optimised and meets the University’s requirements.

One More Thing – Windows 7/10 Lifecycle

We’re also busy developing a Windows client OS Lifecycle that will include a plan for migrating away from OS versions before they are End of Support. We’ll be sharing the plan in the coming weeks and months.
