Contributors discussed many of the most profound questions facing the region today, including: the outlook for peace and democratic opening after the revolutions in Egypt and Libya; the nature of the regime change in Yemen; why the revolutionary struggle in Bahrain has been comparatively underplayed outside of the country; and the likelihood of a period of prolonged instability in Syria. \u00a0Also discussed were the need for new thinking to overcome the intractable obstacles to peace in the Israel-Palestine conflict, the changing role of Islamist movements, and how the events of the last year have forced a reappraisal of EU and US policies towards the region.<\/p>\n
Panel 1.
