{"id":840,"date":"2022-11-15T13:25:25","date_gmt":"2022-11-15T13:25:25","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/blog.bham.ac.uk\/weareimsr\/?p=840"},"modified":"2022-11-16T12:32:37","modified_gmt":"2022-11-16T12:32:37","slug":"diabetes-uk-supporters-to-visit-the-imsr-to-see-diabetes-research-in-action","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blog.bham.ac.uk\/weareimsr\/2022\/11\/15\/diabetes-uk-supporters-to-visit-the-imsr-to-see-diabetes-research-in-action\/","title":{"rendered":"Diabetes UK supporters to visit the IMSR to see diabetes research in action"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">November is Diabetes Awareness Month and we are pleased to be collaborating with Diabetes UK to organise a special public engagement visit to the Institute of Metabolism and Systems Research (IMSR). <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">As part of their thankathon Diabetes UK are inviting a group of volunteers and staff who go above and beyond to see diabetes research in action at the University of Birmingham and hear about Diabetes UK\u2019s RD Lawrence Research Fellow, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.birmingham.ac.uk\/staff\/profiles\/metabolism-systems\/akerman-ildem.aspx\"><strong>Dr Ildem Akerman\u2019s<\/strong><\/a>, pioneering work.<\/p>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"aligncenter size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"230\" height=\"230\" src=\"https:\/\/blog.bham.ac.uk\/weareimsr\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/100\/2022\/11\/ildem.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-842\" srcset=\"https:\/\/blog.bham.ac.uk\/weareimsr\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/100\/2022\/11\/ildem.jpg 230w, https:\/\/blog.bham.ac.uk\/weareimsr\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/100\/2022\/11\/ildem-150x150.jpg 150w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 230px) 85vw, 230px\" \/><figcaption>Dr Ildem Akerman<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>With the support of Diabetes UK, the Akerman lab in the IMSR has established a state-of-the-art stem cell to pancreatic beta cell differentiation protocol and aims to understand and improve test-tube pancreatic beta cells for the treatment of diabetes.\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Also supporting the event are several other IMSR researchers working in diabetes-relevant areas including:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.birmingham.ac.uk\/staff\/profiles\/metabolism-systems\/ludwig-christian.aspx\">Dr Christian Ludwig<\/a> <\/strong> &#8211; a researcher living with type 2 diabetes and also studying concepts relevant to the condition through novel experimental and analytical approaches to map metabolic pathway activities.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.birmingham.ac.uk\/staff\/profiles\/metabolism-systems\/da-silva-xavier-gabriela.aspx\">Dr Gaby da Silva Xavier<\/a><\/strong> &#8211; whose research focusies on fuel (energy)-sensing mechanisms in cells that may play a role in diabetes and obesity.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/research.birmingham.ac.uk\/en\/persons\/fiona-docherty\">Dr Fiona Docherty<\/a><\/strong> &#8211; a stem cell biologist with research interests in regenerative medicine and cell therapy.\u00a0Fiona works closeley with Ildem.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.birmingham.ac.uk\/staff\/profiles\/metabolism-systems\/Thomas-Patricia.aspx\">Dr Patricia Thomas<\/a> <\/strong>&#8211; an experimentalist interested in the mechanisms underpinning obesity-induced type 2 diabetes (T2D), particularly how intracellular fatty acid plays a role in pancreatic beta cells dysfunction. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.birmingham.ac.uk\/staff\/profiles\/metabolism-systems\/nasteska-daniela.aspx\">Dr Daniela Nasteska<\/a> <\/strong>&#8211; whose research focuses on the role that beta-cellular heterogeneity has on pancreatic islet function.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">We are looking forward to welcoming guests later this month and invite other researchers working on diabetes relevent work to also join us on the afternoon of <strong>Wednesday 23rd of November in the IBR common room at 3.30pm for informal networking.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><em>Other organisations supporting IMSR research are welcome to get in touch with Caroline Gillett to discuss future public engagement possibilities.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>November is Diabetes Awareness Month and we are pleased to be collaborating with Diabetes UK to organise a special public engagement visit to the Institute of Metabolism and Systems Research (IMSR).
