What happens when an Irish piano virtuoso becomes one of the most influential musical figures in Imperial Russia? That’s the story explored in my new short documentary, John Field: The Adventures of an Irishman in Russia.
Often overshadowed by the fame of his musical ‘successor’ FrĂ©dĂ©ric Chopin, John Field was a pioneering composer of the nocturne and a remarkable figure in 19th-century European music. Yet, much of his legacy remains underexplored—particularly his decades-long life in Russia.
This short film traces Field’s arrival in St. Petersburg, his flourishing career in Moscow, and the cultural intersections that made his music both deeply European and distinctly embedded in Russian artistic life. Drawing on my doctoral research in historical musicology, the documentary includes historical context, primary sources, and of course, musical excerpts.
Field’s journey reveals more than just biography—it opens up questions about cultural transmission, artistic identity, and the shifting borders of musical influence in the Romantic era.

Whether you’re new to Field or already a fan of his dreamy nocturnes, I hope this film offers a fresh and thought-provoking glimpse into the transnational life of a composer who helped shape Romantic pianism from the East.
