We recently caught up with University of Birmingham Dubai Class of 2022 graduate, Tanvi Malhotra, to find out what she’s been up to since graduating.
Briefly describe your role:
I am a Sustainability Intern at Lapita, Dubai Parks and Resorts (Marriott International). I work within the department of engineering where I support in sustaining responsible operations by implementing sustainability initiatives, such as waste reduction programs, energy conservation measures, and water conservation strategies. I also conduct research on best practices in the hospitality industry and collaborate with other departments to promote them and encourage a culture of sustainability throughout the resort. Moreover, I carry out sustainability audits to identify gaps and seek solutions to close them. Furthermore, I help educate guests and staff about these initiatives through employee engagement programs and trainings. My highlights so far have been supporting the Green Key Certification program, implementing waste segregation and recycling practices, effectively placing food reduction programs, and planning staff engagement events such as volunteering at dog animal shelters, clothing donation drives, etc.
What is the biggest mistake you have made since graduating and what have you learned from it?
The biggest mistake I have made since graduating is only looking for a job. I focussed on seeking a job, rather than upskilling myself along the way. Instead, whilst looking for a job, it would’ve been more beneficial if I had expanded my network, picked up some new skills, and did online courses related to my field. Through this, I would have had an edge while searching for a job.
What is the best piece of advice you have been given?
The best piece of advice I’ve been given is to network endlessly. Attend every event you are able to, even if it is not related to your course. Doing so will help you meet new people and build connections. It is the best way to put yourself out there. You never know who your next business partner may be! Strive to take any opportunities that may come your way and participate in everything, especially if it is outside your comfort zone.
What have you learned since graduating that could be helpful to other graduates like you?
To know and accept that you may not always have a set path or plan after graduating is alright. Not being too hard on yourself and instead, seeking out mentors and role models in your field of interest may help with gaining clarity. Networking using LinkedIn may also be effective to gain guidance and in some cases, internship or job opportunities. Always keep your horizons broad and keep your options open in order to try new things that pique your interest and know that it will always work out in the end.
Can you recommend us something?
I would recommend taking a gap year after graduating. I think it is essential for career exploration, personal development, and taking care of one’s mental health and well-being. A gap year can provide a chance to reflect on personal goals and values, and to gain a deeper understanding of oneself. It can be an opportunity to develop new skills, hobbies or interests that might not have been possible while in school. It can also be the chance to gain valuable work experience and explore career options before committing to a full-time job. This can help individuals better understand their career interests and goals, and may provide valuable experience that will make them a more competitive job candidate in the future. One can even travel, immerse oneself in a new culture, and gain a global perspective. This can be particularly beneficial for those interested in working in a global or international context.
