Building Authentic German Classrooms: Our Journey Through the First Year

Published: Posted on

What a year it has been! When we launched Towards an Authentic (German) Classroom in January 2025, our goal was ambitious: to make German language learning more engaging, relevant, and connected to real-world contexts. Twelve months later, we’re proud to share what we’ve achieved and where we’re heading next.

Starting Strong: Workshops and Conversations

We kicked off with our first major event in February: Authenticity in the German Language Classroom and the Role of Digital Tools. This online workshop brought together higher education partners to explore hybrid learning platforms and discuss what really matters to teachers and learners. It gave us a clear picture of the challenges and opportunities ahead.

Listening to Teachers and Learners

Throughout the year, we ran surveys to understand how the use of digital tools and authentic materials works for students in schools and universities. While responses were slower than hoped (teachers are busy people!), the insights we gathered have already shaped our next steps. We’ve refined our questions and will relaunch the survey to capture even more voices – including those of boys, who were underrepresented in the first round.

Creating Spaces for Collaboration

In June, we hosted a CPD day during the Goethe-Institut Career Roadshow at the University of Birmingham. Teachers, students, and our project partners came together online and in person to share ideas on digital tools, motivation, and interactive learning. It wasn’t about numbers; it was about depth. The conversations were rich, and the feedback invaluable.

Reaching out to You and Your Classroom: Blog, Instagram, and Podcasts

One of our recent exciting developments is the launch of our (this!) blog: German Network Now – Resources for your Authentic (German) Language Classroom. It’s already packed with event updates and teaching resources, and we’ve connected it to an Instagram feed (@letsgetauthentic_de) for quick, visual inspiration. Plus, we’ve recruited student volunteers to create podcasts on GCSE German topics. Currently being trialled with pupils and coming to your classroom soon!

Looking Ahead: Big Plans for 2026

We’re not stopping here. Next June, we’ll host a series of one-day workshops titled Living the Language – Authentic German in the Classroom in Liverpool, Birmingham, and Nottingham. Supported by the Goethe-Institut, these events will bring expert mentors and fresh materials to teachers across the UK.

Challenges and Opportunities

Of course, it hasn’t all been smooth sailing. Recruiting research assistants with strong German skills has been tough post-Brexit, and visa restrictions make things even harder. But we’ve persevered and now have a network of assistants and experts from the Goethe-Institut ready to help us push forward.

Why It Matters Language learning is about more than grammar – it’s about connection, culture, and creativity. By building authentic classrooms and sharing best practices, we’re helping teachers inspire the next generation of German speakers.
