Name: Gaby Mendes

Degree details: BA Education

Job title: Founder of Talk Twenties/Event Operations Manager

Describe your current role:

I  recently founded my company, Talk Twenties, after writing an award-winning blog about life as a twenty-something. After struggling somewhat after leaving university, I saw a need for more support for twenty-somethings entering the big wide world.  Talk Twenties  aims to be a support network for twenty-somethings, providing relatable content through podcasts, events and newsletters.

As well as building my own business, I still work full time for an organisation that runs business-to-business exhibitions and awards ceremonies in the additive manufacturing, 3D printing, plastics and medical technology industries.

What is the biggest mistake you have made since graduating and what have you learnt from it?

When I graduated from the University of Birmingham, I went straight into secondary school teacher training which really wasn’t for me. I made the decision after two years to leave and follow my passions for events and for blogging. Although I often think it was a mistake doing my teacher training, as it left me feeling quite confused about my future, the experience has ended up being the reason I decided to start Talk Twenties.

What is the best piece of advice you have been given?

Always follow your gut when it’s comes to making big decisions and don’t be too swayed by what your family and friends think you should do!

What have you learned since graduating that could be helpful to other graduates like you?

That the first job you get isn’t always going to be the right one but every experience you have is helpful to your future, even if you don’t quite see it at the time.

Can you recommend us something?

I’d recommend listening to our podcasts or attending a Talk Twenties event!

To mark International Women’s Day on Sunday 8 March, we will be celebrating the diversity of experience of our alumnae, staff and students and hosting a ‘share your day’ event on Twitter and Instagram. Get involved and share your day using #UoBwomen.
