‘In the Dust of this Planet’ – 18th of June

On Tuesday the 18th of June we will be reading Eugene Thacker’s In the Dust of This Planet. Join us at 5:15pm in the Westmere Hub, where we will be considering two chapters of this work: ‘Preface: Clouds of Unknowing’ and ‘1. Three Quaestio on Demonology’. We realise this is a lot to read for this week, so please feel free to read as much or as little as you like!

In a world that is becoming increasingly unthinkable, Eugene Thacker suggests that we turn to the horror genre. To confront the limits of what we can think is a central motif of the genre, as well as a way of interpreting philosophy. To Thacker horror means the horror of philosophy: those moments where philosophy confronts its own horizon of existence. Thacker’s text will pick up on the themes of the supernatural, particularly the folkloric figure of the witch, as encountered in our previous reading of Slow Science. If you attended this session, we’d love to hear about how you think these two texts overlap.

As this is the third week of the Contemporary Theory Group, we welcome feedback on how attendees think the group should be run. Do you think this works as a weekly group, or would you prefer us to meet up bi-weekly? Do you also have any suggestions for future texts, to read from weeks 7-9? If so, please prepare and share your suggestions with us.

We look forward to seeing you all on Tuesday the 18th!
