June is already incredibly booked out on my end, so I’ve decided to do two reading group sessions in a row over the next fortnight, to bank them in before the chaos. The readings are super short and not too technical, so will make for some nice chats without adding too much to all of our collective plates, and were suggested by Ellis (thank you!).
On Wednesday 21st May 2025, 5-7pm BST, we will be discussing the relationship between fantasy and revolution via an interview with China Mieville (linked) for International Socialism from 2000.
On Wednesday 28th May 2025, 5-7pm BST, we’ll be chatting about whether classical literature counts as fanfiction, and any other fanfic hot takes you care to share, by reading Ika Willis’ “The Classical Canon and/as Transformative Work” (linked).
As always, if you don’t have time to finish the readings, you’re still very welcome to join – the articles are just starting points for discussions, and we never have 100% completion rates in the room.
The sessions are hybrid, and based both at the University and on Zoom. To grab the info about the room booking or the zoom link, email Georgie @ gxr697@student.bham.ac.uk.
