Contemporary Theory Reading Group (Semester 1 Schedule)

The Contemporary Theory Reading Group is back for the first semester of 2019/20! Join us at the Westmere Postgraduate Hub Seminar Room, every second Tuesday at 3pm, from the 8th October (REFRESHMENTS PROVIDED by the CCLC and CDC), where we will interrogate contemporary texts in the Norton Anthology of Critical Theory, engaging with questions such as:

How have our perceptions of narrative changed in a multimedia environment?

What is the relationship between technology, alienation and race?

Can we imagine alternative futures to ecological crisis?

Our sessions are scheduled as follows:

  • October 8th, Video Games: Ian Bogost’s ‘The Rhetoric of Video Games’
  • October 22nd, AfroFuturism: Alandra Nelson’s ‘AfroFuturism: Past-Future Visions’
  • November 5th (ARTS 119), Ecology: Jane Bennett’s Vibrant Matter: A Political Ecology of Things
  • November 19th, Film Criticism: Rey Chow’s Sentimental Fabulations, Contemporary Chinese Films: Attachment in the Age of Global Visibility
  • December 3rd, Narrative Theory: David Herman’s ‘Narrative Theory after the Second Cognitive Revolution’
  • December 10th: Christmas Celebration & Term Recap! Join us for Christmas celebrations and a chance to recap the term!
