Today I had the pleasure of speaking about my research at the Association for Science Education Conference which is currently being held here at the University of Birmingham for school science teachers. It is Europe’s largest science education conference and it aims to promote excellence in science teaching and learning in schools. The Frontier Science section of the conference, in which I gave my talk about the control of breathing and the role of carotid body chemoreceptors in health and disease, aims to ignite teachers’ passion for science and to support them to bring cutting edge research into their classrooms.
In my talk I mentioned a new careers resource, Understanding Life, produced by the Physiological Society, which gives a fantastic overview of the range of careers in the Life Sciences and the pathways that students can take to pursue these careers. It’s an excellent resource for teachers and students alike and copies can be obtained directly from the Physiological Society.
In the College of Medical and Dental Sciences we are keen to support teachers in the delivery of the science curriculum in local schools and colleges. If there is a particular area you would like support with please get in contact with us (mdsoutreach@contacts.bham.ac.uk). We may be able to put you in contact with researchers and experts to inspire your students or provide ideas and support for practical activities. We can also put you in touch with learned societies such as the Royal Society of Biology who provide lots of information and resources for teachers and students. You might also be interested in our Masterclass programme where students can come onto campus to participate in 2-hour sessions on a whole variety of topics, from the Ethics of Organ Transplantation to the Biochemistry of Life. There should be something to interest all of your students and raise their aspirations of studying at University.
