New Exhibitions/Nuevas Exposiciones

Our first exhibition, Mar de Sombras/Sea of Shadows, took place at the Instituto Cervantes in Manchester in June 2024. It emerged from a fruitful collaboration between three associations dedicated to the recovery of historical memory — BCA’1937 UK-Euskadi, Intxorta 1937 Kultur Elkartea and Gernika Memoriaren Lekuko — alongside our research team, MTC (Memory as Transgenerational Care). The exhibition shared the experiences of the Basque children evacuated to Great Britain at the start of the Spanish Civil War (1936-1939), delving into the personal stories of these young refugees and exploring how their legacy has been passed down through generations. Through the contributions of artist Judith Martínez Estrada and poet Alicia García Bergua, the exhibition has served as an instrument of reparation that seeks to dignify and provide public recognition to the pain of the victims within the context of long-delayed democratic demands.

Sea of Shadows was just the beginning of a long journey through the affective cartography of exile. Since then, we have continued working and traveling to expand the project, inviting others to contribute new testimonies and photographic material through numerous workshops and meetings. Their family albums have come to life in the work of Judith Martínez Estrada: in the digital print and textile installations that make up The Unknown Path I and II, as well as in her Ephemeral Landscapes and the hexagons of The Memory Hive. The new exhibitions in the Basque Country borrow from Alicia García Bergua’s poetic verses, “We are the eye of the needle/ through which all the thread passed,” and are now titled: Orratz-Begia/Gerrako Umeak-The Eye of the Needle/Children of the War. We want to thread this invisible needle in order to create a tapestry in which the voices of the Basque diaspora of 1937 are interwoven, voices that find their echo in the experiences of so many refugees today, victims of war and violence.

We will continue traveling. Our next stops in 2026 are Andoain, Irún and Brussels.

En junio de 2024 celebramos nuestra primera exposición, Mar de Sombras/Sea of Shadows, en el Instituto Cervantes de Manchester. Fue el resultado de la fructífera colaboración entre las asociaciones BCA’1937 UK-Euskadi, Intxorta 1937 Kultur Elkartea y Gernika Memoriaren Lekuko–dedicadas a la recuperación de la memoria histórica–y nuestro equipo de investigación, MTC (Memory as Transgenerational Care). La exposición ofreció una oportunidad para compartir las experiencias de las niñas y niños vascos evacuados a Gran Bretaña al comienzo de la Guerra Civil (1936-1939). Nuestra intención era ahondar en las historias personales de sus protagonistas y en los procesos de transmisión de ese legado a las siguientes generaciones. Gracias a las aportaciones de la artista Judith Martínez Estrada y la poeta Alicia García Bergua, la exposición ha servido como instrumento de reparación que busca la dignificación del dolor de las víctimas y su reconocimiento público en el marco de unas demandas democráticas largamente postergadas.

Mar de sombras fue solo el comienzo de un largo viaje por la cartografía afectiva del exilio. Hemos seguido trabajando, y viajando, para que otras personas se sumaran a este proyecto, aportando nuevos testimonios y material fotográfico a través de numerosos talleres y encuentros. Sus álbumes familiares han ido cobrando vida en la obra de Judith Martínez Estrada: en las impresiones sobre velo que conforman The Unknown Path, así como en sus Ephemeral Landscapes y en los hexágonos de The Memory Hive. Las nuevas exposiciones en el País Vasco toman prestados los versos de Alicia García Bergua, “Somos el ojo de la aguja/ por la que todo ese hilo fue pasando”, para pasar a titularse ahora: Orratz-Begia/Gerrako Umeak-El Ojo de la Aguja/Niños y Niñas de la Guerra. Queremos enhebrar esta aguja invisible con el fin de ir urdiendo un tapiz en el que queden entretejidas las voces de la diaspora vasca de 1937, voces que encuentran su eco en las experiencias de tantos refugiados y refugiadas hoy en día, víctimas de la guerra y la violencia.
