Welcome to the UniDiv project website

The long-term integration of immigrant and ethnic minority communities into British society has become an increasingly important topic of discussion.

Unity out of Diversity (UniDiv) is a three year research project funded by the Future Research Leaders scheme of the Economic and Social Research Council (ESRC) (ES/K009206/1-2) and run by Dr Laurence Lessard-Phillips at The University of Birmingham since May 2015. Before then, it was hosted by The University of Manchester. Its aims are to explore the meanings and understandings of immigrant adaptation and its dimensions in the academic and public policy circles as well as among the general public.

Our aim is to build a solid evidence base for future research and policy and stimulate the debate about what constitute a well-integrated society and which dimensions (socio-economic, cultural, social, spatial) are perceived or should be considered as important in the process of adaptation of immigrant and ethnic minorities in Britain.
