8 January 2022 marks what would have been the late great David Bowie’s 75th birthday. Regarded as one of the most influential musicians of the 20th century, his work was acclaimed by fellow musicians and critics, particularly his innovative work in the 1970s.
He studied art, music and design before embarking on a professional career as a musician in 1963. His first top five entry was Space Oddity in 1969. In 1972 he re-emerged during the glam rock period with his flamboyant androgynous alter ego Ziggy Stardust. With an extensive discography from 1967-2016, his music covered generations of new fans. He also ventured into the world of films with, notably, the cult film ‘The Man who fell to Earth’ (1976).
Among the many music awards and achievements in his lifetime, in 2008 the spider Heteropoda davidbowie (a reference to his album ‘Ziggy Stardust and the Spiders from Mars’) was named in his honour and in 2015 a main-belt asteroid was named 342832 Davidbowie.
