LGBTQ+ History Month

LGBTQ+ History Month is the annual month-long celebration of lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender history and the history of gay rights and related civil rights movements. In the UK this celebration takes place every February and aims to raise awareness of, and combat prejudice against, those belonging to the LGBTQ+ community and its history.

LGBTQ+ History Month began in the USA in 1994 as a result of Black History Month. It was started by a high school teacher named Rodney Wilson. While teaching about the Nazis, Wilson revealed to his class that he was gay and told them that this was something he could have been killed for. In the UK, LGBTQ+ History Month has been an annual event since 2005.

Throughout the month, here at UoB, there are a multitude of different ways to get involved with and show your support for these LGBTQ+ celebrations, many of which can be found in this timetable of the events taking place this month.
