Intersex Day of Remembrance Day is on the 8th November. It marks the birthday of French Herculine Barban, an intersex person who lived in 1838 to 1868. Her memoirs were published in the 1970s by Micheal Foucault.
An intersex person does not fit the typical definition of male or female due to biological characteristics, however, many choose to define themselves with male or female. Some prefer to identify as intersex or use the term queer.
Intersex Day of Remembrance sheds light on the issues faced by intersex people, including the unnecessary medical operations intersex people have been subjected to. The goal of the day is raise awareness of gender equality and independent bodily self-determination for people who are intersex.
