This year, Deaf Awareness Week runs from the 5th to 11th May. This year’s theme is ‘Beyond Silence,’ highlighting the importance of looking beyond common misconceptions about deafness. The week aims to embrace the rich experiences, identities, and contributions of Deaf individuals in society.
‘Beyond Silence’ also encourages a greater understanding of the various methods of communication used by Deaf and hard-of-hearing people. These include British Sign Language, lip reading, written communication, and assistive technology. By recognising these alternative forms of communication, the theme sheds light on the social, cultural, and professional barriers that many Deaf individuals face.
Deaf Awareness Week therefore advocates for improved accessibility, inclusivity, and equal opportunities. This year’s campaign calls on individuals, organisations, and communities to actively work towards substantive change. Some examples of this include promoting BSL learning, improving workplace accessibility, ensuring equal access to education, and creating more inclusive public spaces. It is a week for everyone to reflect, learn, and take action.
