We are relaunching the Romance Reading Group online just in time for our Christmas Romance special!
Our first 20/21 session will be on Thursday 10th December 2020 from 17:30-19:00, so save the date in your calendars! It will be on: Christmas, Romance and Popular Films. Please RSVP via our website (https://romancegroup.wixsite.com/home/event-details/christmas-romance-and-popular-films). Then, closer the time, you will then be sent more information, a Zoom link and the readings (specifically for this session, they will only consist of a few YouTube videos and images).
When you think of Christmas romance, Disney films, and princes and princesses, you may expect fairy-tale-like heteronormative narratives of love. You wouldn’t be far off the mark: Charlotte and Evvie will discuss such normative patriarchal voices and their restrictions on gender in terms of plot and costume. But as Lucy and Katrina will show, there exist other, newer and less conventional representations of love. The four presentations in this session are in dialogue with each other, and with the larger context of dominant and subversive streams in popular romance and popular film. After each presentation, you are invited to join the dialogue as well.
