Due to sickness, the below Romance Reading Group session on ‘Queer Romance Novels’ has now been postponed to the following week, Thursday 28th January at the same time, 17:30-18:30ish. We are very sorry for any inconvenience. Your registration will remain the same and so will the Zoom link you have been sent, but this will now work next week, Thursday 28th January at the same time, 17:30-18:30ish. We hope you are still able to attend.
Our next Romance Reading Group online session is based on Queer Romance!
Our second 20/21 session will be on Thursday 21st January 2021 from 17:30-19:00, so save the date in your calendars! It will be on: Queering the Romance.
Please RSVP via our website (https://romancegroup.wixsite.com/home/event-details/queering-the-romance). Then, closer the time, you will then be sent more information, a Zoom link and the readings (specifically for this session, they will only consist of some quotations to read through).
This session will be led by Lucy and will seek to question how contemporary queer romance novels conform, challenge or adapt the romance genre through two recently published LGBT+ romances: Red, White and Royal Blue by Casey McQuiston (2019) and Let’s Talk About Love by Claire Kann (2018).
Some questions to consider while reading:
- What makes a romance novel queer or LGBT+?
- How is the queer body being portrayed in these texts?
- What romance tropes are being used in these novels?
- Are these tropes being queered? If so, how?
- How is the queer romantic relationship being portrayed?
- Do the romances in these novels conform to heternormative ideals?
- Does the sexuality and gender of the authors influence the ‘queerness’ of the novel?
- How important is it to have LGBT+ authors writing LGBT+ romances?
- What role does intersectionality play in these texts?
Hope to see you on 21st!
