The University of Birmingham was proud to showcase its Postgraduate Taught (PGT) programmes at the British Association of Sport and Exercise Medicine (BASEM) 2024 conference, offering insight into its innovative academic opportunities in Sports and Exercise Medicine. Held this year in Coventry at the Ricoh Arena, the BASEM conference is a central event in the sports medicine calendar, drawing medics, academics, and students alike from across the UK and beyond. Attending this event as both exhibitors and delegates provided the University of Birmingham with a unique chance to highlight its postgraduate programmes, including MSc courses that bridge academic research with hands-on industry practices in sport and exercise science.

The university’s stand offered detailed information about the range of postgraduate taught programmes available including MSc Sports and Exercise Medicine, MSc High Performance, and our two new MSc’s launching in September 2025- Clinical Exercise Physiology and Sports business, management and leadership. Faculty were on hand to discuss how these programmes provide a foundation in evidence-based practice and research skills tailored to the field of sport, exercise, and health. They emphasised the university’s commitment to aligning academic learning with practical experience, preparing graduates for meaningful careers in sports medicine, physiotherapy, exercise physiology, and more. This was particularly relevant given the BASEM conference audience, many of whom are already working professionals looking to enhance or further specialise their skills in sport and exercise medicine. Plus a strong representation of our alumni students.

Beyond the stand, representatives from the University of Birmingham engaged with the BASEM conference lectures, which spanned cutting-edge topics within sports medicine. Sessions covered a variety of pertinent subjects, including injury prevention and management, rehabilitation, exercise physiology, and emerging digital technologies in sport. Attending these lectures allowed the University of Birmingham team to stay updated on the latest research and clinical practices and to network with some of the field’s leading experts. This engagement with the forefront of sports medicine also feeds directly into the university’s curriculum, as faculty members bring fresh insights and research back to their teaching and course development.

One of the key benefits of attending conferences like BASEM is the opportunity to connect directly with potential students, current professionals, and leading academics who are passionate about sports medicine and exercise science. Prospective students at the conference could see firsthand how studying at the University of Birmingham can help them achieve their career goals, whether they aim to work with elite athletes, conduct impactful research, or enhance their current practice. For many, the networking and knowledge-sharing opportunities available through the University of Birmingham’s connections within BASEM are invaluable.

The presence at BASEM 2024 also reflects the University of Birmingham’s dedication to contributing to and learning from the broader sports medicine community. By staying involved in key industry events, the university ensures its programmes remain relevant, research-driven, and responsive to the needs of the sector. This means that graduates from Birmingham are not only equipped with up-to-date theoretical knowledge but also ready to apply what they learn to real-world challenges in sports and exercise medicine.

For those interested in exploring a postgraduate journey in Sports and Exercise Medicine or any of our other PGT offerings, the BASEM conference was a perfect introduction to the opportunities that await at the University of Birmingham. With a firm commitment to blending academic and professional development, Birmingham continues to be at the forefront of education in sports medicine and exercise sciences, setting up future leaders to advance and shape the field.
