The University is running a series of events aimed at supporting leadership development across Professional Services
Leadership development across Professional Services was a strong emerging theme from the Senior Managers Forum in summer 2018. Colleagues felt that whilst we have a strong and ambitious workforce, staff sometimes struggled to step out of their functional expertise into leadership positions as they moved up through the organisation.
Subsequent focus groups with staff from across Professional Services identified that moving into management and leadership positions could be isolating, and taking on one of these roles did require a step change. People who had engaged with relevant training and development had a positive experience. There was a strong agreement that a network adds value for sharing experiences, building alliances and deepening knowledge of other areas of Professional Services.
The Birmingham Professional Leadership Series
This series of events is designed to bring colleagues together from across the institution to engage with a range of topics that will support their leadership development, build their knowledge of the wider University and encourage them to network with colleagues from all areas of Professional Services.
Sessions will take place during the working day in a range of locations across campus, lasting around an hour. The first part of the session will be engaging presentations led by UoB colleagues from different levels across the University. Each session will give the attendees the opportunity to engage with the discussion and with other attendees.
The working group will work collaboratively with POD to ensure that more formal opportunities for training and development are showcased to staff through the series. The mentoring sessions will also seek to involve POD in their delivery.
The first event of the series is 23rd July, 3-4pm, LG10 – The Old Gym.
Who should attend?
The sessions will be open to all Professional Services staff across the institution, regardless of grade. Senior Management Forum colleagues should encourage attendance from those member of staff who have been identified as having the potential to move into more senior, leadership roles. However, all staff will have the opportunity to register to attend.
