World Mental Health Day

The World Health Organisation recognises World Mental Health Day on 10 October every year. This year’s theme is ‘Mental Health in an Unequal World’. The green ribbon is in the international symbol of mental health awareness.

The past 18 months have brought many challenges for all of us but, in particular, for people with mental health conditions, many of whom are experiencing even greater social isolation than before.

Statistics from NHS Digital 2020 paint a worrying picture –

In 2020 1 in 6 young people had a mental health problem, compared to 1 in 10 in 2017

Black people are four times more likely than white people to be detained under the Mental Health Act

58% of people receiving benefits said that their mental health was poor

There are lots of ways you can get involved – whether you are an individual, a group or an organisation. Take a look at the Mental Health Foundation’s website https://www.mentalhealth.org.uk and at MIND’s site https://www.mind.org.uk/get-involved/world-mental-health-day/ there is lots of information, support and resources available.
