Diwali

Diwali is known as the festival of lights as the festival symbolises the victory of light over darkness. It festival takes place at different times of the year as the Hindu calendar is based on the moon. In 2023, Diwali falls on 12th November.

The festival lasts five days and honours the goddess of wealth, Lakshmi. Hindus celebrate Diwali by spring-cleaning, exchanging festive gifts, decorating buildings with lights and big firework displays. Oil lamps known as diyas are lit and set in homes to invite in the presence of Lakshmi. Rangoli is a popular Diwali tradition where people draw colourful flowers on their door to welcome the gods.

Diwali originates in India and is celebrated by multiple religions. It is often thought of as a Hindu festival but it is also celebrated by Sikhs and Jains.
