Festa della Repubblica is celebrated on 2 June each year and the day commemorates the institutional referendum held in 1946, in which the Italian people were called to the polls to decide on the form of government, following the end of the Second World War and the fall of Fascism. The referendum of 1946 resulted in the creation of the Italian republic. The public was hostile to the monarchy, which had supported Benito Mussolini’s rule, and around that time the Italian royal family was also exiled from Italy.
MA Art History & Curating student, Francesca Vitale, supplied these photos of how the Colosseum in Rome was lit up last night for the Festa della Repubblica celebrations.
The main celebration takes place in Rome and usually includes placing a laurel wreath as a tribute to the Unknown Solider at the Altare della Patria by the President of the Italian Republic and a military parade along Rome’s Via dei Fori Imperiali.
