Taking a leave of absence during a doctoral program can be a daunting decision. Whether due to personal reasons, health concerns, or professional opportunities, stepping away from your studies often comes with mixed emotions: relief, uncertainty, and the lingering question – “How will I return?” Restarting your doctorate is not only possible but can also be an opportunity to approach your work with renewed focus and resilience. Here’s my thoughts after returning to the program this January.
Embrace your decision
The first step to restarting your doctorate is to acknowledge and accept your journey as it is. A leave of absence is not a failure—it is often a necessary pause for personal growth or to address pressing circumstances. Remind yourself that returning is a testament to your commitment and resilience. However, it is far easier to tell others this, having the self-compassion to take your own advice often takes practice and support to break the moulds of previous conditioning.
Practicalities – Reconnecting with the University
Your institution’s policies and procedures will play a significant role in your return. Start by:
- Contacting Your Supervisors: Set up a meeting with your supervisors or Program Lead to discuss your re-entry plan. Be honest about any challenges you foresee and what support you may need.
- Understanding Administrative Requirements: Check with your graduate school or department for any forms or deadlines related to reinstatement. Clarify details like funding, coursework, or dissertation timelines.
- Reviewing Your Progress: Assess where you left off. Were there incomplete courses, comprehensive exams, or dissertation milestones? Would you be better completely refocusing? Having a clear picture of your status will help you create a roadmap.
Final Thoughts
Restarting your doctorate after a leave of absence is a courageous decision that requires patience and self-compassion. By embracing your path, setting realistic goals, and seeking support, you can successfully reignite your academic journey and make meaningful strides toward your aspirations.
Listening to a podcast earlier, one comment really resonated with me about Education in today’s world: When you do something that you really believe in you are ‘No longer portraying a skill, you’re portraying your soul’
So, for me at least, it’s “Welcome back—your next chapter awaits!”
