IT Services play major role in the new Library move and opening

Published: Posted on

The New Library opened on Monday 19th September with many comments from Students of ‘wow’ as they walked through the door.

IT Services underpinned the move and the opening by ensuring that the network, public PCs, staff PCS, entry gates, and self-service machines were all in place and correctly configured. The move of the physical stock was one of the most complex ever undertaken in the UK, and Applications Services staff worked closely with Library Services updating the Library Management System and FindIt@Bham over several months, so that both staff and students knew where stock was as it moved from several Library buildings into the new one.

Library Services also introduced new functionality such as Dynamic Loans, Auto-Renewal and Laptop loans all of which needed configuring and testing alongside the move itself.  Many staff from across IT Services were closely involved with the project over several months adapting well to the fluctuating opening date and final ‘big push’ to get everything in place for Library staff and users on the opening day. All in all, this has been an exciting project to have contributed to!
