Advanced Research Computing team – new name, new structure

Published: Posted on

Previously known as the Research Support Section, headed up by John Owen, the team has recently changed its name to Advanced Research Computing (ARC).

The change of name was driven principally by the confusion that reigned with ‘Research Support’ units of one kind or another in many budget centres across the University – not least in Finance and the Library.

‘Advanced Research Computing’ is a much better reflection of what the team does, and this name is widely used across other Russell Group universities.

Team structure

John Owen is Head of Advanced Research Computing; Carol Sandys is Deputy Head.

The department is split into three sub-teams:

  • Architecture, Infrastructure and Systems is headed up by Simon Thompson. Rad Poplawski, Dominic Wilson, Gareth Horton, Jon Hunt and Luke Sudbury make up the rest of the team.
  • Engagement is headed up by Aslam Ghumra. The rest of the team consists of Debbie Carter, Stephanie Thompson and Earl Joseph.
  • The Research Software Group is led by Andrew “Ed” Edmondson. The rest of the team is made up of Simon Branford, Laurence Hurst and Cerys Lewis. Mike Allaway will join the team at the end of April.

After many years at the forefront of research computing in Birmingham, Paul Hatton will retire in May this year.
