Module Focus: Qualitative Research Methods (08.05.17)

Published: Posted on

This module aims to cover all aspects of a qualitative research project while also giving insights in the theoretical underpinnings and debates that shape qualitative research. Therefore, it is essential for anyone doing a wholly or partly qualitative project for their dissertation, but also useful for students with an interest in the narratives, experiences and politics of health and illness.

Since 2014/15, the assignment is also very practical in nature, including a critical appraisal of a qualitative paper and data analysis of a set of interview excerpts. This has been challenging for staff and students alike—especially as critical appraisal and working creatively with data really need two different skill sets—but students have appreciated the opportunity to ‘get their feet wet’ and work with real qualitative data.

With constant improvements in response to student feedback and also changes in staff with qualitative expertise this module is always a work in progress and I am looking forward to seeing its next incarnation.
