Calling all dinosaur fans! Lapworth Allosaurus App released

Published: Posted on

The Innovation team has released an exciting new virtual reality app, designed for the Lapworth Museum of Geology. The app allows visitors to learn more about the Allosaurus – a predator from the late Jurassic era.

You can download the app for free from Google Play or the Apple App Store. It is designed to be used in conjunction with a Google Cardboard Viewer or similar. These are fairly affordable – at around £15 or so for a basic model – and can be used with a  range of virtual reality apps, creating a fully immersive experience for the user.

The Allosaurus App was created through a collaboration between Computer Science, the Lapworth Museum and the IT Innovation Centre. If you visit the Lapworth Museum, you will meet “Roary” – the rather impressive Allosaurus specimen on display, pictured above. The Allosaurus App is designed to allow visitors a unique insight into this species – including what it would have looked like, how it would have moved and what its life would have been like back in the Jurassic era.

The Allosaurus is from the same family of species as the Tyrannosaurus Rex. The app also allows users to interact and compare the anatomy of the two species, including viewing the skulls of both an Allosaurus and a Tyrannosaurus Rex in 3D, from every angle.
