Global Accessibility Awareness Day

Published: Posted on

21 May 2020, is the ninth Global Accessibility Awareness Day (GAAD). The purpose of GAAD is to get everyone talking, thinking and learning about digital access and how this affects people with different disabilities.

Accessibility is about making sure as many people as possible can use our services. It’s not just good practice – it’s a legal requirement. A lot of people perceive it as only affecting people with disabilities – but services designed with accessibility in mind have a lot of added benefits for everyone:

  • Closed captions for the deaf are also really helpful in noisy offices.
  • High contract colours are great for visual impairments – and they also work great on a mobile phone in bright sunlight.
  • Keyboard access works for people who can’t use a mouse – or if your mouse has just broken.

Make sure your content is accessible

There are resources within the Digital Toolkit on the intranet, including an Accessibility Checklist, to help you ensure that your content is fully accessible.

There’s more information about Accessibility Legislation and how you can make sure you’re meeting it, on the Accessibility pages on the intranet.
